Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported Mayor Garcetti and Councilman Gil Cedillo wrote a letter to Governor Brown endorsing his plan to allow developers to avoid detailed local and environmental reviews if 10% or more of the units are designated affordable housing and the project conforms to the underlying rules.
According to the Times, “Experts in the Los Angeles development process have said the law would wipe away the city’s three-decade history of requiring detailed reviews for any project larger than 50 units.
As part of the state budget deal announced Thursday , Brown and lawmakers agreed to provide $400 million in affordable housing subsidies, provided the Legislature approves a version of the governor’s streamlining plan.
In the letter, Garcetti endorsed additional state spending on housing subsidies as well as a $2-billion borrowing plan to fund housing for the homeless that also made it into the budget deal. Garcetti also asked Brown to amend his proposal to boost the percentage of homes that must be reserved for low-income residents to qualify for streamlined review.”
The Coalition to Preserve LA opposes the Governor’s plan and called for like-minded citizens to take to social media and let Governor Brown know they want to retain local oversight of projects.
