Western Avenue between Melrose Avenue and 3rd Street will be targeted as one of fifteen areas to receive special focus in Mayor Garcetti’s “Great Streets” initiative.
The Mayor’s Great Streets is a program to improve neighborhood gathering places and generate economic activity by revitalizing key community corridors throughout Los Angeles.
“The Great Streets Initiative is about strengthening neighborhoods one ‘main street’ at a time,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Angelenos are looking for dynamic and safe places to meet, to shop, to spend time with their families. This is what the Great Streets Initiative is all about.”  – Mayor Garcetti, June 2014
According to Garcetti, the first priority in the Great Streets Program will be to make sure that street projects are coordinated. In order to do this, he has created the Great Streets Studio – located in City Hall and tasked with community outreach and project development of the 15 streets.
Other nearby streets among the first 15 ‘Great Streets’:
- Pico Boulevard, between Hauser Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue
- Hollywood Boulevard, between La Brea Avenue and Gower Street
What would you like to see happen on Western Ave? We drove up the avenue to see what’s there – a mix of businesses, a couple of schools, few trees and not much interesting streetscape happening.
