On Monday evening, Septemetber 28, the Garden Conservancy and the Ebell of Los Angeles will present an illustrated talk with Arne Maynard, one of the UK’s most sought after and internationally renowned garden designers. Maynard is celebrated for his ability to create gardens with a particular sense of harmony and belonging, as well as his love of traditional craftsmanship and eye for historical detail. His new book, The Gardens of Arne Maynard (Merrell, London, 2015) focuses on twelve of his gardens and offers fascinating insights into the evolution of his designs.
Maynard will introduce his book and give a personal account of how collaboration with gardeners, plant specialists, and traditional craftspeople, combined with an unwavering passion for plants, enables him to create gardens that appear to have grown out of their environment, naturally suiting both their owners and locations.
Central to Maynard’s work as a garden designer is his ability to identify and draw out the essence of a place, something that gives his gardens a particular quality of harmony and belonging. He has a holistic approach to design and believes that to succeed, a garden must relate and respond to its surrounding landscape, its history and to the buildings within and around its confines, as well as to the needs of its owners. Maynard’s approach applies to all of his projects wherever they are located around the world.
Los Angeles garden lovers can gain insight from how Maynard’s approach will work for their own gardens and inspire our public spaces.
