Chevalier’s Books is having a party and you’re invited!

Please join Chevalier’s on December 2nd at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate their 75th anniversary in style with food, drinks, books, and friends. A huge thank you from everyone at the bookstore – they couldn’t have done it without the support of the incredible Larchmont community.

Chevalier’s Books was founded by Joe Chevalier, circa 1940.  According to Joe’s nephew and niece, Edwin and Kathy Chevalier, who grew up locally on Arden Boulevard, the store began as a lending library in 1939. Chevalier’s then became a bookstore in 1940, when it also began to sell greeting cards and interesting knickknacks.

The book store moved through a few locations on Larchmont Boulevard before settling into 126 N. Larchmont, which was a former bank building – evidenced by the large steel bank vault door, which is still visible in the back room.

Former owner, Filis Winthrop, bought Chevalier’s in 1990, and is still happily part of today’s Chevalier’s team. Filis’s tenure as Larchmont Village’s community bookseller spanned nearly 25 years.

The store, which is one of  Southern California’s  few remaining independent bookstores, reopened its doors on November 9th, 2014, following a brief closure to remodel and reorganize. The store’s revitalization is thanks to new owners, Darryl Holter and Bert Deixler, in partnership with their friendly and knowledgeable team of booksellers.

Darryl and Bert have brought with them an upsurge of energy and growth for Chevalier’s. The shelves are fully stocked with thousands of bestselling titles, as well as unique literary works you may have yet to discover. The community is welcomed to come in and enjoy fun book signings, readings and creative events on a regular basis. Children relish curling up in the kid-size armchairs in the cozy new kids’s corner, with one of their favorite books in hand. And don’t forget to peruse the side room, with its beautiful array of art books and fabulous cook books!
