Christmas carolers will sing their way through North Larchmont this Sunday evening, Dec. 14th, when a group of students and families from the Rhodes School of Music will meet to carol in the village. The singers accompanied by trumpet will meet at the Rhodes School at 5 pm for hot chocolate and a warm up. Â The carolers will move north up Larchmont Blvd, turn east, and work their way back down Gower to Beverly. If you live or work in the area please open your doors and windows to the holiday music.
Leo Viscomi, an eighth grader who lives on Curson Ave, is organizing the event with his music teacher David Rhodes, partly to get in the holiday spirit, and partly to support an after-school music program called the Harmony Project that provides music lessons and ensembles for disadvantaged youth.
“I’ve studied piano and trombone and trumpet,” Viscomi told the Larchmont Buzz. “But lots of kids don’t get to. So I was looking for a program to help support. I thought of Wilshire Crest School first, because they lost support for their music program. But then I realized the Harmony Project would be even better because they get music to lots of people.”
The Harmony Project in Hollywood operates out of the Musicians Guild Local 47 on Vine, and provides nearly 300 youth a chance to have private or peer music lessons or play in ensembles, six days per week year-round. The Harmony Project has been at work since 2001 as an extra-curricular program designed for low-income students to get musical exposure and training.
Participants will be asked to make a contribution ($10 or $15 that will go to the Harmony Project) to join in the caroling. Â Songbooks will be shared and some Rhodes teachers are bringing their instruments to help accompany the group. Bring your voice or an instrument along and join in the holiday spirit.
