Larchmont Buzz reader and photographer Keith Johnson snapped some shots of poem goddess Jacqueline Suskin writing and selling her wordy wares at the Hollywood Farmers Market this weekend. Customers give Suskin a topic, and she turns out a poem in a matter of moments on her retro typewriter, then takes time to read it aloud to its new owner. She often getting tears, smiles and $5 bills in return.
There was a line of customers waiting to get their poems done when Johnson passed by Suskin near the main crossroads of the market last week. Johnson noted that she arrived by bicycle, toting her table, chair and typewriter along.
In case you missed it, Deborah Netburn interviewed Suskin in the LA Times and gives us insight into this quirky, demanding, but rewarding business of writing poetry on demand.
