Chef for a Night

Jim Bloomfield, seen with wife and daughter, out on the town.

You ever wonder what it’d be like to cook in the fast-paced  heated confines of a professional kitchen? If you really love to cook, as Jim Bloomfield does, it’s a dream come true: being a one-night chef at a charming bistro under the guidance of a great chef.

By day, Bloomfield practices eastern medicine using acupuncture, herbal medicine and therapeutic bodywork to treat area residents from his bungalow office at 435 N. Larchmont Blvd. By night, he is the family’s chief cook and bottle-washer, using all natural ingredients to whip up scrumptious dinners for his family and friends. It was through a dinner party for friends that Bloomfield was asked if he’d like to participate in the “Friends Cook at Canelé” where normal folk get a chance to strut their stuff in a professional kitchen.

Offered on the occasional Tuesday night, the Friends Cook at Canelé was initiated by Chef Corina Weibel (Campanile, Lucques) and is a no reservations, prix-fixe dinner  ($37 for 3 courses tonight.) Designed to bring a cross-section of people together for a feast, it also allows a non-chef like Jim to design the menu and cook for friends and foodies who love a good meal. Many Larchmontians are expected to make the drive east to Canelé in Atwater Village and partake in a new kind of ‘community’ meal.

Tonight, Feb 7th, Jim will be adding his culinary flair to a menu of spring onion consomme with roasted artichoke quenelles and basil oil, crispy quail with shiitake and truffle bread pudding, and cavolo nero meyer lemon granita with walnut shortbread. Regular menu items also available. Reservations are not required, just show up between 5 – 10 pm for the gastronomical feast. And maybe bring a table of Larchmont friends.
