As the paving of 3rd Street continues through this week, we thought you would enjoy this shot of how it used to be. This 1948 photo of an LA Streetcar at 3rd Street and Gramercy reminds us that there was a time when 3rd was even bumpier than it is today.
The Larchmont/Hancock Park area was served by the R Line. The R Line ran from downtown, along 3rd Street and then up Larchmont towards Hollywood. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority replaced the streetcars with diesel buses on March 31, 1963.

It is more likely that this photo is of the layover / connector track running in a transit alley parallel to Wilton, between Wilton and Gramercy. I believe it is NOT Third Street. The right-of-way still exists as a bus layover, but only between Fifth and Sixth Street. See:
