Robin Ellis: Actor-Author-Chef-Diabetic to Appear at Chevaliers

PBS heart-throb “Poldark” is set to sign copies of his new book on cooking for diabetics on Saturday, March 17,1-3 pm, at Chevalier’s Books on Larchmont Blvd.

You may remember Robin Ellis from his leading-man performance  in Poldark, a favorite PBS Masterpiece Theatre series set in late 18th century Cornwall that aired in the 1970s and is coming back to life in a recently-released boxed set from Acorn (29 episodes!) The LA Times calls the series, another upper vs under class costume drama, a “cure for your Downton Abbey blues.”  It’s also available to stream from Netflix.

But jump to the present, and you’ll find that when Ellis, who lives in Southern France with his American wife Meredith Wheeler, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes he had to make changes in his life. “Type 2 diabetes does not manifest itself obviously,” Ellis shared in a phone interview with the Buzz. ” Unless you have the very simple blood test for it, you may not have any physical indications that your blood sugar is abnormally high, and you could be in trouble.” He said he’s heard there could be as many as 80 million Americans undiagnosed with the disease.

A self-taught chef, Ellis went on to tweak his own diabetic diet based on Mediterranean cuisine, and treats his condition with diet and exercise, not medication. Urged on by friends and colleagues, Ellis then wrote “Delicious Dishes for Diabetics” and is on a cross-country tour promoting the cookbook.

Ellis shared one of the simple, tasty recipes with the Buzz which readers can download and try for themselves :  Chicken Breasts in Spicy Lemon and Parsley Sauce. Ellis said this dish, inspired by film legend Ismail Merchant, is elegantly simple with its twist of cinnamon.

Robin Ellis is one of those charming, approachable people who will no doubt be fun to chat with at Chevaliers on Saturday. There is much more to explore about him (including photos of his enchanting spread in France) before you meet him on Saturday. See the links below.
