Nearly every segment of the community gathered yesterday for lunch at the elegant Ebell of Los Angeles to celebrate Jane Gilman’s birthday and her recent retirement from running the Larchmont Chronicle, the  newspaper she founded with Dawne Goodwin more than 50 years ago.
The luncheon was hosted by the Wilshire Rotary (one of the oldest Rotary clubs in the country) and the Miracle Mile Chamber of Commerce (which Gilman helped found).  Both organizations  presented gifts to Gilman for her years of service to them and the larger community. On behalf of the newspaper staff, John Welborne and Pam Rudy presented Gilman a Tiffany locket with a “key” to Larchmont.
Representatives from various public officials brought citations for Gilman. Former Council Member Tom LaBonge offered a personal tribute citing several examples of how Gilman’s involvement improved the community. Â One notable example was persuading then City Councilman John Ferraro to remove two parking meters from Larchmont Blvd to create a driveway, thus enabling the construction of the parking garage.
