Congratulations to Mark Brooks, Head of School at Pilgrim School, on his election as President of the Board of Trustees of California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).  The California Association of Independent Schools has been the primary Board of Standards for the more than 200 independent elementary and schools in California for nearly 70 years.  Brooks has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) for several years in addition to being active in CAIS.

“This election is a distinct honor and indication of respect for Mark and for Pilgrim School, which has been accredited by both CAIS and by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for decades,” reported the school in its announcement of Brooks’ election. “As President of the Board of CAIS, Mark will be involved in the most cutting edge developments in education and the latest innovations in teaching and learning, a definite plus for Pilgrim!”

Pilgrim School, founded in 1958 and located at 540 S. Commonwealth Ave., is an independent, co-educational, college-preparatory day and boarding school for students in grades Pre-K through 12.  Its 420 students come from 50 different zip codes and 10 different countries. It’s one of the most diverse schools in California and is considered an “anchor” to the high-density neighborhood surrounding it. Pilgrim School is a division of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles (FCCLA).

Brooks is a graduate of The University of Southern California and Loyola Law School, and was selected as a 2010 Fellow in the Klingenstein Program for Visiting Heads of School at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Prior to being appointed Head of School, he served as the Associate General Counsel of Honda North America and the Vice-President and General Counsel of SeeBeyond Technology. He was appointed a trustee of the National Association of Independent Schools in 2010, for which he chairs Member Services Committee. Mark and his partner Gus are the proud fathers of a son attending Whitman College.

Since becoming Head of School at Pilgrim 10 years ago, Brooks has helped to transform the school and its urban campus. In June, the school announced plans to build a new athletic field known as the “Field of Dreams” project. When completed, the field will be one of the largest open spaces in the neighborhood between Hancock Park and downtown Los Angeles, and will serve to foster the re-energized and growing Pilgrim Patriots Athletic program.
